Revision to Crime Data Summary Information
The MPD is committed to providing crime data to our community partners to keep them informed about incidents in the different neighborhoods in DC. At the same time, we are also committed to protecting the privacy of crime victims and the integrity of ongoing investigations. In an effort to balance these objectives the MPD will no longer provide narrative information associated with the crime incidents. Narrative information will be for internal use only.

The following crime information will continue to be available to the public through several websites as well as through the MPD’s community email discussion groups:

• Criminal Complaint Number (CCN)
• Block (block address provided; specific addresses are not available)
• Offense
• Method
• Offense
• Report Date

Individuals interested in getting additional information about a particular incident are encouraged to reach out to their police district commander, their PSA lieutenant, or to attend one of their monthly PSA-Community meetings.

All statistics presented here are based on preliminary DC Code Index crime data. Data reflects crimes reported at least two business days before today's date. All statistics are subject to change due to a variety of reasons, such as a change in classification, the determination that certain offense reports were unfounded, or late reporting. Please note that reporting the data almost "real-time" to the public means that there is an expected error rate up to +/- 10% on the preliminary data. The MPDC is working aggressively to improve the accuracy of the historical and current data, and to launch new technology and processes to reduce the error rate in 2008. In the meantime, MPDC has concluded that having this information available to the public is preferable to removing the data entirely from the web.

In addition, the preliminary data do not represent official statistics submitted to the FBI under the Uniform Crime Reporting program (UCR). All preliminary offenses are coded based on DC Code and not the FBI offense classifications. Any comparisons between DC Code preliminary data and the official crime statistics published by the FBI under the UCR Program are inaccurate and misleading because of expected differences between local and national offense classifications. The MPDC does not guarantee (either expressed or implied) the accuracy, completeness, timeliness, or correct sequencing of the information. The MPDC will not be responsible for any error or omission, or for the use of, or the results obtained from the use of this information. All data visualizations on maps should be considered approximate, and attempts to derive specific addresses are strictly prohibited. The reports provided by this application include only events that can be mapped. This limitation excludes approximately 3 percent of the data.

As part of Chief Cathy Lanier’s dedication to improving crime data tracking and analysis, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) recently upgraded key data systems. As a result of these upgrades, the crime data for 2006 and 2007 has been changed. All data downloaded http://data.octo.dc.gov/ prior to 01/28/2008 should be deleted and replaced with the updated data now available on this site.

Additionally, it should be noted that individual records of crimes are subject to change as a result of further review and investigation.

If you are unfamiliar with these data formats, please read the descriptions below. In most cases, you will be asked to select which date field the report should be filtered by (ie. Completion Date, Modified Date, etc).
Once your selections are made, click "Get Data." If data does not appear, you may need to turn off pop-up blockers. Or, the requested data may be too large, if this is the case, you will receive an error message & be asked to either split the data or provide your email address so we can process your request and email the results.

Data Formats:

Text/CSV
Use this format for easy access to the data. Text/CSV files could be opened by most desktop spreadsheet applications (e.g. MS Excel).

Atom feed
Better suited for consumption by automated programs capable of handling Atom files. Allows subscription to data feed for continuous updates. Learn more about Atom.

XML
Better suited for consumption by automated programs capable of handling raw XML files.

ESRI
Used for consumption by ESRI-compatible mapping applications. Most datasets in ESRI format are updated on a monthly or quarterly basis as they are not "operational" in nature.

KML
Used to display geospatial data in Google Earth, Google Maps, and similar applications.
